If you are learning how to make hamburger steaks decide what type of ground beef you would prefer to use. Choose between seventy five percent to ninety percent lean ground beef. The seventy five percent will have more fat in it. It will be cheaper to buy but will have more shrinkage. On the other hand extra fat adds extra flavor. The ninety percent lean beef is dryer with no shrinkage. I prefer ground beef around eighty to eighty five percent lean beef.
Any of this ground beef is usually cheaper than buying steak. I purchase mine at the local country meat market where it is cheaper than anywhere else I can find it. Their hamburger is also fresher with a much better taste. The “grind” of the beef is also important to me. I prefer the larger coarse grind for steak burgers; finely ground beef is not suitable.
When learning how to make hamburger steaks you will find the flavor and texture is everything. What are hamburger steaks vs hamburgers? We already covered two important parts of this question. Hamburgers can be made with more fat content and a finer grind. Hamburger steaks must have higher lean percentage and larger grind which contributes to the flavor and also the texture.
When learning how to make hamburger steaks, flavor is added by extra ingredients and methods of cooking. It can be as simple as adding salt, pepper and onion juice. An egg adds more moistness and a dash of nutmeg gives the flavor a little extra boost. Shape the mixture into round or oval steak burgers. These patties can be broiled, baked or browned on the stove top. However I cook the meat, I love steak burgers with sauces and gravies.
NOTE: When you learn how to make hamburger steaks, you can serve them on buns but they are also delicious with noodles or mashed potatoes with gravy.
NOTE: When recipes call for canned soup or canned broth, keep in mind when adding additional salt that usually the salt content is already high.
